Children and Other Dependents
CHILDREN
You may be able to come to the UK if you are the child of a British citizen or someone who has indefinite leave to remain here.
Under UK immigration law, you will have to show that you meet one of the following requirements:
- Both your parents are in the UK and at least one of them is British or has indefinite leave to remain; or
- One of your parents is a British citizen or has indefinite leave to remain, and the other one is applying to come to the UK; or
- One of your parents is a British citizen or has indefinite leave to remain, and the other one is dead; or
- One of your parents is a British citizen or has indefinite leave to remain, and that parent has had sole responsibility for you; or
- You are applying to join a parent or other relative who is British or has indefinite leave to remain, and there are serious or compelling circumstances that mean that it would be undesirable to exclude you from the UK.
Additionally, you will have to show that you meet the following requirements:
- You are under 18 at the date of application; and
- You are not married, in a civil partnership or leading an independent life, and you have not formed a separate family unit; and
- Your parent or other relative is able to accommodate you without relying on public funds; and
- Your parent or other relative has enough money to support you without relying on public funds; and
- You do not have any unspent criminal convictions.You will be given indefinite leave to enter the UK, which means that you are entitled to live here forever from the time that you come.
ADOPTED CHILDREN AND CHILDREN OF PBS MIGRANTS
You can come to the UK if you have been adopted by someone who is British or has indefinite leave to remain in the UK. You must have been adopted in a country that is part of the Hague Convention.
You can also come to the UK if one of your parents is in the UK under the Points Based System.

PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS AND OTHER DEPENDENT RELATIVES
If you are an adult and are financially dependent on a relative who is British or has indefinite leave to remain in the UK then you may be entitled to join them or stay with them in the UK. You must be related to them in one of the following ways:
- Parent
- Grandparent
- Son or daughter over 18
- Sister, brother, uncle or aunt over 18If you are their parent or grandparent over 65 years old then you must be a widow or a widower, or both travelling together.
Alternatively, it may be that you have remarried but your second spouse and their family cannot support you.
Other relatives have to show that they are living alone in the most exceptional compassionate circumstances.
For all cases, you also have to show that you meet the following requirements:
- You depend on your relative in the UK for financial support; and
- There is enough accommodation for you in the UK without relying on public funds; and
- There will be enough money to support you in the UK without relying on public funds; and
- You do not have any close relatives in your home country who could support you; and
- You do not have any unspent criminal convictions.If your application is successful, you will be given indefinite leave to enter or remain, which means that you can stay in the UK forever.
